How Electric Servo Technology is Bringing Sustainability and Efficiency to Die Casting

  • Die Casting

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL, February 10, 2022 -

Think of the die casting machines on your factory floor as the lights in your home. Does it make sense to keep the lights on when no one is in the room? Likely no. Keeping them running all the time not only brings unnecessary wear, but uses extra energy. And furthermore, what if on demand your lights could determine the amount of illumination required and when to turn on and off? In manufacturing, imagine the competitive advantage similar machine capabilities could allow factories.

By replacing a traditional AC induction motor with electric servo motor technology, factories are able to move towards more sustainable manufacturing which brings numerous advantages. The electric servo motor paired with a hydraulic pump not only adds to the efficiency of the hydraulic equipment, but effectively reduces the overall energy consumption while providing pressure and volume on demand.

On Demand and In Control

With Shibaura Machine’s electric servo motor driven hydraulic pump, a die cast machine is able to better control what and when pressure and volume is needed. Unlike the traditional induction motor that is always rotating, the electric servo motor is turned on for higher volume and pressure when required. By being able to be turned on and off with closed-loop control vs open, it allows the machine to eliminate overflow loss. In turn, the hydraulic monitoring gives feedback to the electric servo motor to communicate when more pressure is needed, giving it on demand.

Advantages to using an electric servo motor technology include:

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions
  • Lower power consumption
  • Hydraulic pressure and oil volume are more easily controlled

While both the AC induction and electric servo motors are the power source for the oil pump, the electric servo works on demand in comparison to the AC induction motor working continuously.
